Dane Orozco, a military veteran, found a forever companion in a dog who has a similar struggle as his.
Before he decided to quit military service, Dane lost his leg in 2016 in one of his missions. At first, the brave man tried to brush it off, but depression consumed him as he felt helpless without one leg.
When Dane’s immediate supervisor noticed he was struggling, the former suggested that he files an early retirement. Although still young for retirement, the man agreed. For Dane, it was the most logical decision since he does not want to bother other team members about his condition.
But despite retiring early, the internal struggle continued to haunt Dane. He sought the expert help of a professional to address his lingering problem. In one of his therapy sessions, the therapist asked him about the activities he previously enjoyed.
Before entering the military service, Dane is fond of dogs. When the therapist learned about this, he suggested that the veteran should adopt one. Dane acquiesced as he believes that adopting one would channel his attention to taking good care of the dog.
The veteran then went to the Inland Valley Humane Society in Pomona to look for a dog that would fit his lifestyle. At the shelter, Dane locked eyes with a special dog, who would later change his life for the better.
The volunteers introduced Dane to a German Shepherd who recently arrived at the shelter. The dog got hit by a vehicle, leaving his one leg shattered. Dane and the dog, who was later named Kane, share the same fate.
During their first meeting, Dane and Kane immediately clicked. With this, the veteran processed all the needed documents for Kane’s adoption.
When Dane received clearance, he brought the dog home with him. Right now, Dane and Kane are volunteering in a non-government organization that focuses on assisting military veterans.
