Gorleston is a port town located in Norfolk, England. It is situated at the mouth of River Yare, which runs across a portion of the city. Its riverside bank is a popular destination for the locals as it offers a relaxing and refreshing atmosphere.
But one day, the area became a witness to a horrifying incident. Thankfully, a brave man turned the moment into an inspiring and heroic story.
Out of breath
Ben Poole, a boxer who has been training his whole life, was walking along the riverside on his way to a boxing event when he heard a commotion. A family was standing by the river bank shouting for help. One child was even crying out loud, calling out to his dad who was inside the river then.
Apparently, the family was taking a stroll with their pet, and their dog fell into the cold water. The dad saw their beloved pooch struggling to stay afloat and decided to jump in as well. Unfortunately, he couldn’t carry their heavy pup and climb out of the steep edge at the same time.
When Ben got to the distressed family, the dog owner was already exhausted from treading water. The frigid river didn’t help make things easier. No help was in sight, so the boxer decided to dive in as well.
Fished out
Ben quickly swam to the sinking man and his dog and helped to keep them afloat. The brave boxer was also looking for a way to get all of them out of the river. Despite having trained regularly, his stamina was quickly running out.
Luckily for the trio in the water, a boat was passing by, and the crowd watching the incident called the attention of the people in the water vessel. As soon as the boat captain saw the floating men, he quickly turned his vessel towards them. In a few minutes, Ben, the pet owner, and the pup were fished out of the water. The watching crowd erupted in cheers.
The family thanked Ben for unselfishly helping them in their time of need. Without him, there was a good chance that their dad and dog would have not stayed above water long enough for them to be saved.
