Another unlikely friendship between two different species caught the eyes of animal lovers on the Internet. A one-minute video uploaded on YouTube perfectly encapsulated a friendship between a puppy and a baby rabbit. The said video had no dialogue or caption, but we can understand why it went viral.
Aside from the two animals being effortlessly adorable, the video shows how they genuinely enjoy each other’s company. The two didn’t seem like they were put together and forced to pose against their will. The puppy even groomed his bunny companion, who did not flinch or complain about it.
After a few moments, the puppy began to feel sleepy. Its head bobbed up and down, indicating that he was about to fall asleep. Unexpectedly, the rabbit approached him to catch his head!
The image of these two baby animals snoozing together screams excessive cuteness. Even as they fell asleep, you could see how the puppy wrapped his paws around the rabbit. We speculate that you would want to cuddle up with them.
Moreover, they were inseparable during feeding time. Even when the rabbit was busy with its meal, its clingy best friend remained close. The video also depicted the bunny munching on fruits and vegetables with another bunny, but the adorable puppy stayed by their side. We can only assume he was patiently waiting for them to wrap up their meals so that he could play with them.
People are curious why this phenomenon exists since there are so many intimate connections between two distinct species. Biologists have studied these unusual pairings, and they determined such pairings are necessary for the two species.
According to a team of ethologists led by Konrad Lorenz, different creatures associate and become “friends” for survival reasons, such as hunting for food and caring for offspring. Alternatively, some suggested that it is the animals’ desire for companionship.
Clive Wynne, a psychology professor at Arizona State University, noted in a separate study that most viral videos depicting interspecies friendships take place in human-controlled environments. Such pairings do not occur in the wild. The more we consider it, the less likely a puppy will encounter a wild rabbit in the woods, for example.
Barbara J. King, an anthropologist from The William and Mary College in Virginia, suggested that we need more studies on interactions between species. She believed that previous studies were valuable points, but the database was too small to extract patterns.
Regardless of what conclusion we may draw from these research findings, one thing is sure: These two are certain to win anyone’s heart!
