Residents of a rural area in South Korea started to vacate their properties as soon as the redevelopment project of the local government began. Within a few months, almost half of the locals have moved out. Business establishments, as well as schools, clinics, and hospitals, closed their doors as they transferred to a different location.
One childcare facility, however, remained to have an occupant, despite it being closed for more than 2 years already. So when a kind neighbor noticed her, she began to feed her, and she did it for the next 7 to 8 months. Eventually, she realized she, too, would be leaving soon and she couldn’t just leave the white Jindo behind, so she called local rescuers for help.
They watched the dog from the outside while they checked the surrounding area. They found all the gates locked and there was no clear entrance where the dog may have walked in. They suspected she belonged to the school so they reached out to someone who cleared things up.
The facility’s representative said they didn’t have a dog. Regulations restricted them from keeping one because it posed danger to the children’s safety and health. That being said, the rescuers assumed someone dumped the dog inside the schoolyard, and they confirmed it to be true.
Another neighbor came with a food bowl while the rescuers surveyed the area. He said that he found a sack beside Baekgu, the dog, when he first saw her 7 months ago. At her age, she had to be placed inside a sack to be thrown inside the yard without struggling.
As the responders took a closer look at the school, they discovered there was a way for the dog to leave. At the back of the Kindergarten, there was a small gap between the gate and the ground. She could have used that to get out but instead, she chose to stay.
For so long, Baekgu remained at the same spot where she last saw her owner. She hoped that one day, he’ll be back. Little did she knew, however, that he was gone for good.
Once Baekgu was safe, she went straight to the vet’s office and underwent an extensive medical examination. She tested positive with heartworms but the doctor said they caught it on time so it was treatable. She spent some time at the hospital, and once she recovered, she began a new life in her new home.
