All dog parents like us are aware that their canine companions can become clingy at times. We look after them and provide for them in such a way that they see us as the pack’s leader. However, this pittie and chihuahua duo shows that a dog’s need to link with another soul is not motivated by who provides them with food, but by who provides them with time and attention.
This is Merrill and Taco’s incredible story. These two canines were rescued by San Francisco’s Rocket Dog Rescue. This group essentially rescues dogs in shelters that have overcrowded facilities which euthanize the animals who remain there for an extended period. They had no clue, however, that these two dogs’ lives were intertwined.
The staff discovered that anytime the dogs are separated from one another, both begin to cry. Just like when Merrill had to undergo a procedure for a urinary tract infection. Because they had to separate, Taco sobbed the entire time. That is why, following the procedure, the Chihuahua was permitted to join his best friend in the recovery area.
Additional difficulties arose when the shelter workers attempted to place these two doggos for adoption.
When a man came to adopt Merrill, Taco began crying like a baby as soon as Merrill was placed inside a carrier. The staff was forced to explain the issue to the man, who then opted to adopt another dog instead.
Following that episode, the shelter staff realized they needed to find a home that would take the two dogs together, but this would be difficult given Taco’s status as a senior dog. Fortunately, with the assistance of a foster parent, a family from San Jose came forward to adopt the two dogs. They were aware of the dogs’ unique circumstance, and the family adored them for it.
However, upon examination, it was discovered that Taco suffered from heart and lung difficulties. There was a slim possibility he might die. It was a good thing the family was fine with him having to take medication for the rest of his life following a medical procedure. They recognized their need to keep these two dogs together for as long as possible.
