On New Year’s Eve 2020, Brianna and Savanna, siblings from Texas, lost their beloved Maltipoo named Byron. Ever since the dog was a little puppy, he lived with the two sisters and also acted as an emotional support dog for Brianna, the younger of the two siblings.
When they discovered their pet was gone, they were devastated. What should have been an incredible night of celebration turned into a frantic search mission.
The first they did was to notify the microchip company where Byron was registered.
Adopted
Brianna and Savanna spent their days looking for their dog for the first few weeks of the new year. They checked on every animal shelter close to their area and posted flyers everywhere. They would also post on social media and get in touch with various dog-related accounts and organizations. And, of course, they regularly checked on their microchip app for any developments.
The sisters were relentless. But after a year of searching, their faith started to waver. They were not checking their microchip account often.
But then, after a few months, they happened to check again if there was news about Byron. They were shocked to discover that their pet was not registered with them anymore. When they called the company, they learned that a rescue group had found the dog, and another family had adopted their missing pet.
Public pressure
The siblings got in touch with the rescue group, but they refused to take the dog back from the new owners. Instead, they tried to offer Brianna and Savanna a new dog. They refused.
They talked to the microchip company, and they said that what happened was legal. Even Byron’s new owners refused to return him.
Devastated, the sisters swore to do everything they could to get their dog back. They created an online fundraiser to get legal representation. When the public heard their story, support quickly came in droves. Their case soon became viral, and their legal battle began.
After a few months in court, coupled with mounting pressure from the public, Byron was finally returned to Brianna and Savanna. The sisters were ecstatic over getting their dog back and were so thankful for the huge support they got from everyone.
