A rescued Chihuahua became a headliner when she broke the world record for giving birth to eleven puppies. The previous record was ten. And befittingly, this mama pooch, who was named Laugh Out Loud or LOL, gave birth on National Puppy Day.
LOL, who is only one and a half years old, is staying with her foster mom Josie Brown. But previously, she was a neglected pup that was staying with a hoarder. She lived in filthy conditions with dozens of other animals.
When Unleashed Pet Rescue, a non-profit no-kill animal shelter based in Kansas City, received reports of the inhumane conditions that the animals were living in, they partnered with local authorities to rescue them. One of them was LOL.
Eleven pups
As there were lots of rescued animals that day, the shelter asked their network of foster volunteers to take the animals. LOL was already pregnant then, but Josie did not mind taking her to her home in Olathe, Kansas. As with most small dog breeds, they expected her to give birth to around two to five puppies. But to their shock, there was more, so much more.
LOL had twelve hours of labor, and they couldn’t believe that puppies just kept coming out of her. When more than five pups were born, they saw that LOL still had a bulging belly. They knew that there was still some puppies inside. They actually lost count when they thought she had ten babies.
But when Josie checked the next day, she counted the litter again and discovered that it was eleven. The shelter was getting updates from Josie and was equally in disbelief in the number of puppies she gave birth to. According to them, this was the second time that Josie gave birth despite her young age.
The puppies will stay with Josie until they are big enough to be adopted.
