A landowner was canvassing his property outside of Karditsa, Greece when he heard faint cries coming from somewhere. He looked in all directions but didn’t find anything at all. He decided to walk across his land, and down the ditch, he found what he was looking for.
A young puppy, about three months old at that time, cried relentlessly. He looked exhausted but he didn’t stop making noises so people would hear him. And finally, someone came.
The man wanted to help the puppy but he just didn’t know how. He decided to call for help and contacted several groups and people he thought would be able to lend a hand.
Eventually, he reached Ermionni Giannakou, the founder and lead rescuer of Diasozo Animal Rescue (DAR Animal Rescue).
The kind man explained to Ermionni what the situation was and she didn’t hesitate to help. She asked him for the exact location and quickly drove onsite. She had to do something to get the puppy out of his ordeal, she told herself.
The way to the ditch was steep and slippery. But no matter the challenges, the rescuer was determined to help the poor puppy. They didn’t have any equipment, but that did not stop her either.
Ermionni encouraged the puppy she named Digger to climb up as much as he could. She then tried to grab him while the man held his legs to make sure she didn’t fall. A few moments later, she was able to safely pull him out of the ditch.
No one knew exactly how Digger ended up in the ditch. It’s possible that he accidentally fell down while playing. Someone may have dumped him onsite, too. Whatever the actual reason may be, it was a great thing he was saved.
Digger spent a little while with his rescue friends at DAR Animal Rescue until it was time for him to leave. He was so grateful for everything the man and Ermionni did for him. Without them, he probably didn’t make it through the night.
