In 2021, someone heartlessly abandoned a 15-year-old Australian Shepherd named Belky on the interstate. The poor dog was obese and, worse, covered in maggots.
Fortunately, a Good Samaritan saw Belky wandering along the side of the interstate and reached out to the authorities, who then brought the senior dog to Saginaw County Animal Care & Control, an open-admission animal shelter.
After putting Belky on a diet and treating her for maggot infestation, the shelter transferred the pooch to another animal shelter called the Humane Society of Midland County.
According to the Humane Society of Midland County’s communications coordinator, Casey Nicholson, they saw that Belky’s eyes have hope and desire to be loved and have a second chance at life.
Belky had to lose a few pounds to prepare for adoption. A foundation sponsored a special adoption event, during which the senior dog met her adopter.
A woman named Breanna Dalton saw Belky on Facebook and fell in love right away. And surely meeting her in person only confirmed that the two were perfect for each other. She adopted the senior dog, giving her the home she rightfully deserves.
Dalton said she knows how hard it is for senior dogs to get adopted. Nevertheless, she felt so fortunate that she had had time to visit the shelter and that Belky was still there.
As for the senior dog, she quickly felt comfortable in her new home and her new routine. She enjoys cuddling with her favorite unicorn toy and going for walks with her new mom. She also loves sleeping on her new bed. And every time her mom comes home, the pooch excitedly greets her.
Potential adopters often overlook senior dogs at shelters. What they don’t realize is that these elderly dogs have lots of love to give. Hopefully, Belky’s story would encourage pet lovers to consider adopting a senior dog.
