Although fostering rescue dogs is fulfilling, it can also be heartbreaking especially when you get attached to the dog. Many fosters tell themselves not to get attached but it’s still quite hard to let go of the dogs once they find their forever homes.
Terri Fox is one of the head rescuers for a nonprofit animal rescue organization in Los Angeles, California called Foxy and the Hounds. Terri was part of the team that rescued a dog that had recently given birth to a litter of puppies.
Eventually, all the puppies were adopted and the mama dog, Mary, also found a new forever home. However, after a year and a half, Terri got a call from another animal shelter informing her that Mary was found on the streets and under their care.
Terri’s heart sank and she rushed to the animal shelter to know what had happened to Mary. When she saw Mary, she was horrified by how she looked. Mary had flystrike on her ears, had scars on her nose, and she also chewed on her tail because she was so anxious.
Mary looked defeated. However, when she smelled Terri, she immediately recognized her she instantly changed. Despite her poor condition, she became vibrant and happy when she recognized Terri.
After a few weeks, a couple named Michelle and Doug volunteered to foster Mary. Doug didn’t want to get too attached to Mary since he expected her to be just a foster and they already have two dogs who were also foster fails. However, as hard as Doug tried, it was impossible for him not to fall in love with Mary. Finally, he admitted to his wife that he wanted to keep Mary.
Michelle knew just how much Doug had become attached to Mary. So, to surprise him and as a Christmas present, Michelle gave Doug a box. When Doug opened the box, he found a new tag with Mary’s name on it that had their address on it. The box also contained adoption papers that had his and his wife’s names as the dog’s new parents.
When it dawned on Doug that Mary was going to be a part of their family, he burst into tears. Doug couldn’t hold back his emotion and was so happy that he got to keep Mary. Here’s the heartwarming video featuring Mary’s story and the moment Doug realized that Mary was going to stay with them forever.
