In mid-2019, pages on social media for lost dogs began to post about a white dog roaming the busy streets of Bakersfield, California. Out of concern, many people tried to rescue the dog, but it always evaded capture.
People saw the dog in different parts of town, especially in parking lots.
A Safefurr Place Animal Rescue, a local animal center, tried to get the dog. The group sent a team to its last reported location. It was night time when the team found the dog in a quiet parking lot. The rescuers took their time approaching the dog.
The dog was too cautious and evasive
A team member sat near the dog and offered it some squeaky toy. The dog walked cautiously towards the rescuer. But it kept a few feet of distance between them. After a while, the dog left.
The group tried the next day again. They found a woman named Carly, who already engaged with the dog earlier. The team saw that this woman could help them rescue the dog. The woman agreed, and they gave the woman a leash. When Carly tried to put the leash on the dog, it quickly moved away.
Since then, Carly could not get close to the dog again. Moments later, Carly needed to leave and left the dog alone with the rescue group. Like the day before, the team had no luck getting close to the dog they named Mira.
Determined to rescue the dog
The team returned later at night. This time, another woman named Julie was with Mira. Julie agreed to help the team capture the dog. Since Julie already had some rapport with the dog, she led the dog into a fenced parking lot.
The team went in once they closed the area. After a few hours of getting the dog to calm down, the team successfully captured it. The rescuers brought the dog to their animal shelter.
Now, Mira lives safely away from the danger of getting hit by passing vehicles. The rescuers hope to find a new home for Mira soon.
