A family’s heroic Boxer is named a hero after she stepped between her loving family and a deadly rattlesnake that wants to harm her family during a casual Sunday walk.
One day, 10-year old Cole Lewis, his mom, and their Boxer, Nala, were taking a casual stroll in their Lancaster, California neighborhood, when suddenly Nala jumped in front of her family and stood her ground. It turns out that a deadly Mojave Green Rattlesnake was blocking the family’s path.
Thanks to the Boxer’s protective behavior in her blood, Nala proceeded to stand her ground and take a rattlesnake bite to the face. According to what Cole told ABC7, she did not make a noise when she was bitten once on the nose.
Nala was then rushed to a nearest veterinary hospital and was treated with antivenom for the rattlesnake bite.
Most rattlesnake sightings occur during the spring and fall seasons. The veterinary hospital that treated Nala’s bites says that they get about 150 rattlesnake bites a year, which is a lot. Thanks to this statistic, the family says that they will avoid walking or biking in the area where Nala was bitten.
Nala is now back home with the family she loved and saved.
Even if rattlesnakes are mostly common in southwestern areas, they also thrive in almost all of the USA’s 50 states. And even if, like every other animal, snakes don’t pose a threat unless provoked, they certainly still pose a considerable danger to curious pets. Statistics show that roughly 300,000 dogs and cats are bitten by venomous snakes every year. Not so many dogs and cats are as lucky as Nala.
Pet owners living in an area familiar with venomous snakes, hunting dogs, search and rescue dogs.
Those people who really spend a lot of time doing outdoor activities like hiking or camping can benefit from giving their pets rattlesnake vaccine and take measures to snake-proof their yards.
