It is said that dogs are a man’s best companion. Indeed they all are as they can be the perfect buddy, friend, family, guide, etc. all rolled into one. But did you know they can be a guide dog to their fellow canines too?
This is true for Tao, a 10-year-old Golden Retriever, who doesn’t live a normal and easy life. After being diagnosed with glaucoma, he completely lost his vision. His owner, Melanie, took him to the vet when he saw the pooch having trouble with his eyes. The disease was identified; hence, immediate removal of his eyes was necessary to alleviate and get rid of the pain.
Post-operation, it was evident that Tao was having a hard time. Being totally blind limits his options to move around and go about his daily routine. But, when Oko, another Golden Retriever, came, things changed for the better.
Oko became Tao’s guide dog, catering to his specific needs, that is, navigating the world around him. Although Oko was just 11 months old when they first met, the duo made a great companion out of each other in just a matter of months. Their amazing relationship has gained a lot of attention from the netizens, and they have their own few followers on Instagram too.
The duo’s charm and appeal in their Instagram photos and videos are off the hook. Oko directed and guided Tao for walks while holding his leash, all by himself. Even though Oko was still training to become a guide dog, he made Tao’s life easier and comfortable and acted as his mobility assistance the whole time.
With their growing followers on social media, Melanie is hoping that through this experience, pet owners will not take glaucoma for granted or any health issues for that matter and have their pets monitored at the earliest for prevention. Nonetheless, Melanie and everyone else are looking forward to more adventures and inspiring photos of Oko and Tao all together.
