A German Shepherd named Gavel is a descendant of generations of hardworking canines. In 2016, when he was accepted into the Queensland Police Service’s police dog academy, the force had high hopes for him.
However, Gavel’s handlers quickly realized that the German Shepherd lacked the proper temperament for the job. The dog was so friendly that he may have attempted to befriend criminals instead of pursuing them.
Thus, the academy was forced to release him, but fortunately, Gavel already had a place to call home. Since he was six weeks old, he was fostered at the official mansion of Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey.
As a result of the German Shepherd’s withdrawal from the academy, the governor gave him a position better suited to his friendly nature. Gavel was designated as a Vice-Regal Dog, or VRD for short.
As VRD, the German Shepherd is responsible for welcoming guests to the governor’s official residence. Gavel also accompanies tour groups, and he makes sure he receives his share of belly massages from them as a reward for being a good boy.
Also, this is not everything. On formal occasions, the German Shepherd dons a custom-made coat adorned with the insignia of Queensland. In just one year, Gavel outgrew four of these uniforms due to his rapid growth.
The governor often uploads images of Gavel and his latest shenanigans on his official Facebook and Instagram profiles. People frequently express their admiration for these photographs.
On occasion, the general public has the opportunity to meet a German Shepherd in person on Open Day. Then, Gavel is on duty, ensuring that the guests enjoy the refreshments and music as they stroll through the gorgeous gardens.
The governor of New Jersey and his wife, Kaye de Jersey, enjoy Gavel’s company. They anticipate that he will remain with them for many years to come.
