Recently, a puppy named Gunner faced certain death in the jaws of a ravenous alligator. The frightening video of this encounter showed his owner Richard Wilbanks frantically retrieving something from the water. As he extracted it, the video showed that it was Gunner and he was nearly devoured by a voracious alligator.
The puppy was already ensnared in the alligator’s jaws. However, the fearless man knew precisely what to do.
He was able to free Gunner because Richard was strong enough and he did not give up. The puppy would have perished if not for the 74-year-old guy who managed to snag him from the alligator.
As millions of viewers witnessed Gunner’s viral rescue, they were amazed at how Gunner was saved and that he now lives.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office also viewed the footage and praised the dog’s efforts to survive. Their agency has since incorporated the dog into the Deputy Dogs, Pets on Patrol Program. A gold shield was also awarded to Gunner.
Today, he is assisting the Office of Florida in teaching children about safety, including around alligators. Safety when in school buses as well as when faced with creatures in the water are covered in Gunner’s program. Included in the list of water creatures are alligators, toads, and cane toads. The objective of the program is to increase awareness of the daily dangers that children may face.
After surviving the attack, Gunner should be ready to confidently face a classroom full of schoolchildren. The dog’s owner also expressed his enthusiasm about the program and the opportunity for Gunner to meet new people and help teach them.
The sheriff of Lee County is himself an animal lover. He adopted a puppy named Chance in March 2019. Chance was abandoned by his previous owner its mouth taped shut. Now that he is owned by the sheriff, the dog now serves as the department’s spokesman.
