A dog owner living in the state of Texas got the shock of a lifetime when Luna, her Dalmatian, gave birth to a crazy number of puppies! Luna went into labor around midnight on Thursday July 1st and she was able to give birth to her first five puppies at home naturally, but then her labor abruptly stopped at approximately 7 a.m on Friday morning, prompting her owner to contact the Fredericksburg Veterinary Center. Veterinarian Brittni Turner then advised her to bring Luna to the clinic since it was not common for larger dog breeds to have reproductive complications.
Once Luna arrived at the Fredericksburg Veterinary Clinic she was taken into surgery so that the veterinarians could aid in the delivery of what would be her sixth puppy. Upon closer inspection the veterinarians were shocked to discover the number of puppies that were still waiting to be born. Eleven more puppies were delivered to the shock of the staff and Luna’s owner. They had a hard time keeping track of the number of them!

Luna went on to give birth to a total of 16 puppies. The first five were born naturally and the remaining eleven had to be delivered via C- section. The Fredericksburg Veterinary Center shared pictures of Luna and her puppies on their Facebook page and described it as “all hands on deck” throughout Luna’s delivery with the owner and even receptionists aiding in the births.

The surgery went very well and the mother and all sixteen of her puppies were doing just fine afterwards. Luna came up three puppies short of the world record for the largest litter of Dalmatians. An Australian Dalmatian named Melody delivered nineteen puppies back in 2019 and is the current record holder for largest litter.
