Brandon Joy is an 18-year-old student from the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare eye condition that gradually took his eyesight. By the time he reached eighth grade, he was already legally blind. The teenager lost most of his peripheral vision and night vision.
After graduating from high school, Brandon plans to attend college and obtain a degree in Bachelor of Science. He also wants an education degree so he can become a high school science teacher. But because of his visual impairment, achieving his goals could be pretty challenging.
His family has thought of getting a service dog, but they are expensive.
Generous group
A Canada-based charity organization called Wheels for Wishes learned about Brandon’s dilemma. The group, composed of classic car enthusiasts, has already done many fundraising events to raise money so kids in need could get service dogs. They planned to do it as well for Brandon.
Members of the group quickly organized an event where more than 80 amazing vehicles were featured. They showcased fully restored classic cars and bikes. They even had an automobile parade to promote the fundraising event. People came in droves and were able to raise the money needed to get Brandon his service dog.
The funds they collected will be used for the purchase of the animal as well as for the dog’s training and medical needs.
Grateful
Even before the money was raised, Brandon was already thankful to the generous individuals who organized the fundraiser. It meant a lot to him that there were kind people who were there to support him.
A service dog will help him greatly by offering mobility and safety. The canine could also make life easier by doing certain tasks. But best of all, having a service animal will boost Brandon’s confidence and let him find independence. This will significantly aid him in achieving his life goals.
