Another well-known pet has recently run free into the gates of doggy heaven.
Together with many United States citizens, the Obama family is mourning the loss of Bo, the Portuguese water dog who has come to be known and loved by many. The late canine belonged to the former first family immediately after Barack Obama’s inauguration as the 44th President of the United States.
In a touching tribute in his Instagram account last month, the former President shared details about Bo’s passing. He shared his agony over the loss of their family’s faithful friend and loyal companion. According to Obama, Bo had been a constant, gentle presence in their lives for over a decade. He added that the canine was always happy to see them on their good days, their bad days, and every day in between.
Similarly, former first lady Michelle Obama took to her own Instagram account to pay homage to their beloved pup. She said that the twelve-year-old pooch had been battling cancer for many years. She also shared how they promised their two daughters during their 2008 campaign trail to get them a puppy after the elections.
The former first lady mentioned that Bo was only meant to be a companion for the girls that time–and they had no idea how much the darling pup would eventually mean to all of them.
In her touching tribute, she said that the whole family would miss Bo dearly. However, they take comfort in knowing that he was able to live a joy-filled life of snuggles, fetch games, and evenings lounging on the couch. She also took that opportunity to thank everyone who expressed their admiration for the late canine, saying that they were aware that they weren’t the only ones who cared for him. She ended her caption by reminding all of her followers to hug the furry family members a little closer and asked them to give their pets a belly rub on their behalf.
Bo came into the Obama family in April 2009 after Senator Ted Kennedy gave him to them as a gift. The Kennedys were looking for a shelter dog they could rescue, and they gave Bo to the former first family after being taken back to a breeder in Texas. Incidentally, he also needed a loving home that could take him in–and he fell into the arms of the Obamas. In 2013, the former first family added another Portuguese water dog named Sunny to their pack.
Of Bo’s role in their lives, the former President said that the late canine was precisely what they needed and more than what they expected. After all, throughout his two terms as President, Bo served as a constant presence in Barack’s life. And this is more than reason enough for him to be dearly missed by the whole family.
