Two weeks after her frantic owner left her attached to a fire hydrant in Wisconsin, a small mixed-breed puppy named Baby Girl has found her furever home.
This part of Baby Girl’s journey began one weekend when she was discovered tied to a fire hydrant with a bag containing her favorite toys, food, and a message from her previous owner. The message said that the owner was homeless and coping with other medical concerns, including chemotherapy. She was unable to give a safe and loving home for Baby Girl, so she tethered the dog to a fire hydrant in a densely populated neighborhood to ensure she would be found. The woman also disclosed that she made repeated attempts to surrender the dog to several shelters, including visiting homes to try to find it a new home.
As tragic as the situation really was, the woman’s strategy was successful. One of the residents of Green Bay, Kylie Engelhardt, swiftly saw Baby Girl, contacted the police, and waited with the confused puppy until officers came. The responding police officer collected Baby Girl and took her to the Wisconsin Humane Society, a shelter, where her story gained international attention after going viral on social media.
The shelter described Baby Girl as a dog with canine diabetes. They also shared that her new owner will have to ensure that she gets ongoing treatment.
The dog responded well to the treatments given to her by the shelter. Anyone who would like to adopt the dog would have to work with a vet for a treatment plan that would most probably include regular glucose testing, a healthy diet, and insulin injections. It can be a costly affair and the new owner should be ready for this.
Thankfully, these factors did not dissuade individuals, and the humane organization was overwhelmed with calls and letters regarding the adorable dog. Soon enough, the dog found a new forever family.
