One early morning, Loreta Frankonyte and Eldad Hagar, lead rescuers of Hope For Paws, received a notification about a senior dog that needed urgent help. They headed out straight to the location and met with Persephone Harrington, the kind woman who spotted the dog.
When they saw Pheenie, they knew right away that she’s old and she needed medical attention. The rescuers also learned that Pheenie’s owner was deported nine years ago. Without anyone else to take care of her, the poor dog spent years under the container van. People fed her, but she needed more than just food and water.
Eldad and Loreta also discovered that Pheenie was hit by a truck. She never received any medical care, and that’s how she lost her right eye.
The rescuers offered the dog some tasty treats to gain her trust. It was important for them to go slow so they gave her all the time she needed. Eventually, they placed the gentle snare around the dog’s neck and encouraged her to come out of her hiding spot.
Pheenie had a long list of medical conditions. She was diagnosed with spinal cord infection, urinary tract infection, severe dental disease, and several mammary tumors. But despite her state, she never lost hope and still learned how to enjoy life.
With the help of L.A. Animal Rescue, Pheenie found a loving foster home. She enjoyed the warm summer sun and the cold snow. She played with her foster siblings and loved hanging out with her new friends.
Five months after her rescue, while Pheenie lay by the fireplace, she closed her eyes and passed away peacefully. She didn’t have the best years while she was young, but she certainly had a great life before she crossed the rainbow bridge.
It was a bittersweet ending for the rescuers. They believed they could have done more if only they found her sooner. But for Pheenie, her last days were the best part of her life because she felt nothing but love.
