A concerned resident of Sumter County, South Carolina called the sheriff’s office to report a neglected pup. As a dog lover, the citizen couldn’t bear watching her neighbor’s pet living in poor conditions.
Corporal Kristen Gregory from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office received the report and dispatched animal control to investigate the issue.
When the animal control officers got to the residence and saw the dog, they determined that he needed to be taken away from his heartless owners. They took custody of the dog and brought him to their shelter. The shelter staff tried to contact the dog’s family, but no one responded to their calls. As they seemed to be not interested in him anymore, the shelter had no other choice but to put the pit bull up for adoption.
Real owners
A volunteer from a nonprofit rescue group saw the pit bull’s photo on the shelter’s social media page, and the dog seemed familiar to her. She tried to place the pooch, and she realized that she saw a very similar-looking pup on a lost dog flyer.
The kind volunteer took the flyer from their own facility and brought it to the shelter. They compared the image and the pit bull, and they all agreed that it was highly likely that they were the same. So the staff called the number on the flyer. They told the owner not to get her hopes up, though.
A long-awaited reunion
When the owner arrived, they quickly confirmed that it was their dog, Diesel. He went missing a year ago. Somebody stole the pit bull from their yard in South Carolina. She and her daughter adored the dog and relentlessly searched for him.
It also seemed that the dog had not forgotten them. Once Diesel saw his true family, he immediately ran up to them and wagged his tail furiously. He recognized them right away. There was no doubt left anymore, he was their long-lost pet.
